With their helmet-like, sharply upturned horns and stocky long-haired bodies, muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) are an iconic species in northwest Alaska. Once common in Alaska, muskox herds were heavily hunted and extirpated from Alaska by the mid- to late-1800s. In 1935, 34 animals were reintroduced to Alaska; herds are now found in suitable habitat in areas within and adjacent to Cape Krusenstern National Monument, Noatak National Preserve, and north of the Brooks Range.
