The Northern Cardinal is a medium-sized songbird common in urban habitats. The male, entirely brilliant red, will care for the first brood of chicks while the tan-and-red-crested female incubates a second clutch. Fiercely territorial leading up to mating season, it is common to see a cardinal of either sex fighting its reflection in a window or mirror. The Northern Cardinal is the state bird of seven states.
