Northern Flicker (Yellow-Shafted)

The Northern Flicker is a fairly large woodpecker and one of the few North American woodpeckers that is strongly migratory. Appearing brownish overall, they’re actually patterned with black spots, bars and crescents. The undersides of wing and tail feathers are yellow in the east and red in western birds. Their white rump can be seen in flight. Northern flickers eat mainly ants and beetles, digging for them with their slightly curved bill.
