Also known as the Chesapeake blue crab or the Atlantic blue crab, the blue crab's scientific name, Callinectes sapidus, means "beautiful savory swimmer." Their habitat range spans the length of the Atlantic coast and includes the Gulf of Mexico, inhabiting estuaries and brackish coastal lagoons. They are eye-catching, with their often bright-blue claws and olive-colored shell; claws on the adult female blue crab are tipped with red. As predacious scavengers, their diet consists of plant & insect material, shellfish, recently dead fish, and other crustaceans, including smaller blue crabs.
