Pink Prickly Pear Cactus Bookmark

The prickly pear cactus is an important plant species of the desert southwest ecosystem, providing protection and food for a variety of small animals and birds. Ranging from 2” to 8” (5 to 20  cm) tall,  and 1” to 10” (.3 to 3 m) wide or larger, the green “pads” are modified stems, and spines are evolved leaves, adapted to help this plant survive with very little water. Prickly pear blooms can be seen in April through June, in delicate yellow, bronze, or pink flowers.
