In the United States, native rhododendrons mostly occur in the Pacific Northwest, California, the Northeast, and the Appalachian Mountains, where they often grow in dense thickets on shaded hillsides and in ravines. With the name originating from Ancient Greek ῥόδον, meaning "rose", and δένδρον, meaning "tree”, this large genus of roughly 1,024 species, and possibly over 28,000 overlapping cultivars as listed in the International Rhododendron Registry, are admired and cultivated for their beautiful & sometimes fragrant flowers.
