The saguaro (suh-wah-row) is an iconic keystone species of the Sonoran Desert, with roughly 2 million cacti residing within the boundaries of Saguaro National Park. Living 150-200 years, these towering beings reach mature heights of up to 50 feet at a very slow pace, increasing by a few inches in the first ten years of life and sprouting side arms around 60-75 years of age. Saguaros begin flowering at 35 years, and are pollinated by honey bees, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, and at night, the lesser long-nosed bat.
