The Shenandoah salamander is a small, lungless salamander that “breathes” through its skin. Found exclusively on the high-elevation mountain peaks within Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, the Shenandoah salamander was listed as Federally Endangered in 1989. The Shenandoah salamander can be distinguished from its close relative the Red-backed salamander by a shorter stripe width, equal to 1/3 of total body width in the Shenandoah Salamander, along with the absence of a strongly mottled "salt and pepper" patterned underside present in the Red-backed; adult Shenandoah Salamanders are slightly larger, reaching 7-10 cm, and have more broadly rounded heads.
