Snowy Owl in Flight
The Snowy Owl is the northernmost, heaviest and most easily recognized owl in North America. Standing 20-28 inches tall with a wingspan of 50-57 inches, females are slightly larger than males. Young males have dark brown barring that eventually fades to pure white when mature; females maintain heavily barred markings throughout their lives. Diurnal by nature, a single snowy owl can consume 1,600 lemmings in one year.
