Trilliums belong to the lily family, with thirty-eight distinct species identified in North America. Trilliums are seemingly easily identified by their three petals and three sepals, but due to their variety of colors, forms, and varieties, even in plants growing side-by-side, classification can be quite a challenge. Morphologically, trillium plants are rhizomatous herbs, and produce no true leaves or stems above ground. The “stem” is an extension of the horizontal rhizome and the above-ground plant is technically a flowering scape, with leaf-like bracts subtending the flower.
