Sunflower Pin

The common sunflower (H. annuus) is a wide-branching annual with a rough hairy stem lined with broad, coarsely toothed leaves. At the crown, attractive heads of petallike yellow ray flowers surround disk colors of brown, yellow, or purple, varying from 7.5 to 15 cm wide in wild specimens to over 30 cm in cultivated types. Indigenous farmers began domesticating wild sunflowers over 5000 years ago, and with such varied usage, are sometimes referred to as the “Fourth Sister."
